About Us

Sue Hufford

Mother, Daughter, Wife, Music Teacher

Susan Hufford died March 15, 2014. A year ago.

She was the wife of Jay Hufford, our Vice President of Member Services. She was also our friend.

In a profoundly tragic event, Sue Hufford and her mother-in-law, Sharon Hufford, were killed when their car was rammed from behind.

Sue left behind three children (a daughter who teaches in Japan, and two boys who are students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). She also leaves behind scores of music students. Sue was the sole music teacher at Alexander Valley School, and the four schools of Mark West Union School District. She taught all instruments, as well as voice. Amazing.

In our collective grief it is our duty to wring some –– any –– good from this tragic event.

The music needs to continue. And in Sue's name. Therefore, in conjunction with the two school districts, we have opened accounts in which to make a donation:

  • Susan E. Hufford "the Music Continues" Fund (100% of all donations go to keep the music alive, in Sue Hufford's name).
  • Sharon Hufford Memorial Fund

Drop by any branch to make a donation –– you do not have to be a Member.  Or, if you prefer, write a check to "The Music Continues Fund" (specify Mark West, or Alexander School) and send to: Community First CU, 1105 No. Dutton Ave., Santa Rosa, CA  95401

Mark West Education Foundation, Tax ID: 56-2331535. Alexander Valley School Parent Club, Tax ID: 68-0013283.

2014: We collected more than $32,000 to ensure the music continues. To open the 2014 fall semester, Kara Shelton joined the Mark West staff as its full-time music teacher. She has a Master's Degree in Education from the University of San Francisco, and plays violin in the Sonoma County Philharmonic. She also plays piano, recorder, flute, clarinet and trumpet. The music continues!

2015: On Friday, April 17th, the legacy of Sue Huffed will once again be honored with a fund-raiser. The Second Annual "Let the Music Continue!" At Mark West Elementary School's gymnasium. Pasta Dinner, with drinks, and silent auction. $25 in advance; $30 at the door. Live music by Bittersweet Jam. Tickets available through Brown Bag tickets.

For all those who donated ... Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
